Gallstones

Nutritional guidance for the prevention and management of gallstones, with attention to fats and meal timing.

What it is

Gallstones are the presence of stones in the gallbladder, formed mainly from cholesterol or bilirubin. The stones may remain asymptomatic or cause inflammation.

Symptoms

  • Severe pain in the upper right side of the abdomen
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Indigestion and bloating

Nutritional management

  • Limiting very fatty and fried foods
  • Higher intake of fruit, vegetables and dietary fibre
  • Small, frequent meals
  • Maintaining a healthy body weight
  • Avoiding sudden or very rapid weight fluctuations

  • After a diagnosis of gallstones
  • When there is a history of inflammation or other gallbladder problems
  • When education is needed on choosing foods that support bile function
  • When metabolic or other risk factors that influence stone formation are present
