What it is
Constipation is defined as a condition with reduced frequency of bowel movements (fewer than three per week) and/or difficulty passing stools, presenting as hard or dry stools, intense straining and a sensation of incomplete evacuation.
Symptoms
- Infrequent or difficult bowel movements
- Abdominal distension
- Discomfort
- A sensation of incomplete evacuation
Nutritional management
- Small, frequent meals
- A diet rich in fibre — i.e. 25–30 g/day from wholegrain products, fruit, vegetables, pulses, nuts and edible seeds
- Adequate hydration of at least 2 litres per day
- Increased physical activity, with at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week
When to consult a dietitian-nutritionist
- When you experience chronic constipation or irregular bowel function
- When a personalised nutrition plan is needed, focusing on fibre, fluids and small frequent meals
- When other risk factors or digestive conditions co-exist (e.g. irritable bowel syndrome)
